The Bethan Smith Award
Working with families when something goes wrong is a difficult job, but it is one that Brian fulfils with humility and compassion.
Brian is Clinical Director for West Sussex. He is also an inspirational leader who is highly valued and respected by colleagues across the organisation.
Sometimes we get things wrong, and Brian has been instrumental in changing the way we as a Trust work with families after a serious incident has occurred.
He is actively involved in supporting families after incidents, a role which is extremely challenging and painful as families and carers are often, understandably, very angry about the support their loved ones have received.
Brian is always there to support those families, offering genuine apologies and identifying and acknowledging the lessons to be learnt by us as an organisation, as well as using his professional skills to help families move into a better place.
He does all of this with empathy and humility.
The impact he has had on the families he’s worked with has profound, and the feedback from families and carers is incredibly positive.
