Danni's story

People come to our ward from A&E, community services or via the crisis team. We offer crisis intervention and act as a breathing space, whilst we find people the right support for the longer term. As soon as a person walks through that door we’re already thinking about their recovery.

I originally studied for a criminology degree but I felt I could make more of a difference as a mental health nurse, so I retrained. Sussex Partnership is very keen on the long-term career development of people who show skill and passion. There’s been very quick progression in my career. I am now a charge nurse, the senior nurse on the ward, and it’s such a privileged position to be in. I manage and support staff, but also spend time on the ward. It really is the best of both worlds. I love to get staff excited about the role they play within everyone’s recovery and to motivate the service users too.

The training is fantastic

At first I was anxious about joining a new trust, but the team were so supportive that the change was a smooth one. There’s such a buzz here, everyone has a voice. What’s refreshing is the positive attitude to new team members. The team are really keen to share their experiences and the training is fantastic. I’ve already completed smoking cessation training, and I’m now an advisor. I also want to train to be a student mentor.

Everyone here is passionate, dedicated and welcoming. They embrace change quickly and are forward-thinking. Quite recently we said goodbye to a lady who had been with us for a very long time. She had had a very difficult journey and thought she would never get better. It was moving to see how proud the nurses were of her progress. Every one of the people here stays with you in some small way.

In this job you realise the smallest things can make the biggest difference and I want to inspire other people to make that difference. It doesn’t matter where you’re from or who you are, you can train to do this job and it’s the best job in the world. I love the passion we all have to make this the best hospital it can be. I’ll definitely be sticking around to see it all happen!
