We support qualified nurses and Allied Health Professionals to return to work after a career break, providing all the support you need to make the transition as straight forward as possible.
Support to re-enter your profession
We value Return to Practice colleagues very highly and we want to help you re-enter the profession you are qualified in.
Our Return to Practice programmes will provide you with the opportunity to complete placements to refresh your clinical and professional skills, to reach the standard required to re-register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) or Health and Care Professionals Council (HCPC), as well as any other personal support you might need to make this move work for you.
Returning to practice: Nurses
We know that returning to nursing is a big decision and things might have changed since you left. But now really is a good time to come back!
Whether you left the nursing profession a long time ago, or more recently, we will support you through our Return to Practice programme.
Our nursing Return to Practice programmes are provided at the University of Brighton. These part-time programmes are designed to meet your professional needs, by helping you to regain the skills, experience and knowledge needed to reactivate your NMC registration.
If you are accepted to study at one of our partner universities, and successfully secure your practice placement with us, we will:
- Pay for your course fees
- Support you to find a clinical placement
- Provide theory and clinical-based training
- Allocate a Practice Assessor and Practice Supervisor to support your practice experience.
You will be required to do a minimum of 150 hours in a clinical placement to practice your skills and be assessed by a Practice Assessor who will support you through the clinical aspect of the programme to achieve competence.
Read more about the NMC's re-registration requirements.
On successful completion of the programme you will be supported to apply for a post at Sussex Partnership. We will offer you continuous professional development (CPD) either through our Preceptorship Programme or other ongoing study days or courses.

Returning to practice: Allied Health Professionals
Have you previously been registered with the Health and Care Professionals Council (HCPC), and are looking for an opportunity to update your skills and knowledge and return to the register?
Our flexible working options and excellent education and training opportunities mean that you can develop new career pathways and re-establish your professional skills.
As a specialist mental health, learning disability and neurodiversity NHS trust, we would love to hear from the following professionals:
- Dietitians
- Occupational Therapists
- Physiotherapists
- Speech and Language Therapists
If you've previously qualified as an Allied Health Professional (AHP) and want to return to your profession, you may be required to update yourself on current practices before you can become re-registered and work as an AHP again.
We offer bespoke full and part time programmes to support you to return to practice, as well as paid and voluntary placements.
The re-registration process is flexible and includes a period of supervised practice, formal study, and private study. You can decide how you would like to complete this, however the study element must be no more than 50% of the time spent updating (for example, if you are required to undertake 30 days updating, you may wish to choose 15 days of supervised practice and 15 days of study, or choose to take more supervised practice days and less study days).
The HCPC requires you to update your knowledge and skills as follows:
- 0 to 2 years out of practice – no requirements
- 2 to 5 years out of practice – 30 days of updating (210 hours)
- 5 or more years out of practice – 60 days of updating (420 hours)
Read more about re-registering with the HCPC.
On successful completion of the programme you will be supported to apply for a post at Sussex Partnership. We have a range of career opportunities including leadership, digital, management or working in a variety of clinical areas.
