Middlewood, a 12-bed unit which is run by Elysium Healthcare, is the first inpatient facility for adults with eating disorders in Kent and Sussex, marking a significant milestone.

The design and layout of Middlewood, as well as the clinical model, were coproduced with an expert by experience and Elysium, with input from the Provider Collaborative.

The opening of Middlewood is a vital step towards addressing the growing need for mental health services in the Kent and Sussex area and enables people to stay as close to home as possible. It provides a safe and supportive environment where patients can receive tailored treatment to support their recovery journey.

Middlewood will play an important role in the Provider Collaborative’s efforts to improve the care for adults with eating disorders and ensure that that people who require admission to hospital can access treatment as close to home as possible. The unit will work closely with community services to provide holistic support and improve recovery outcomes, with a clear focus on person-centred care.

Teresa Barker, Chief of Nursing at Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust and Maggie Davies Chief of Sussex University Hospitals recently visited Middlewood and expressed their recognition of the significant impact eating disorders can have on young people’s lives, and the collaborative efforts involved in making this unit a reality, noting the positive impact it will have for Kent and Sussex.
